Successful search engine marketing means an ongoing cycle of submission, tracking, measuring results, modifying submissions, resubmitting the submissions and then re-evaluation.</p>
<p>There is a basic formula at the core of any online venture and search engine marketing is no different:</p>
<p>If you want to make money it takes 2 things: traffic and content.</p>
<p>You can have all the traffic in the world, but if you do not have what they want, they are not going to buy in.</p>

<p>And what about Google specifically?  The Enquiro study showed that 85% of Google users choose a natural listing while 14% clicked on a paid &#8220;sponsored&#8221; link.  The study stated that, &#8220;Google users also had the lowest level of confusion about what was a sponsored link on the search results page.&#8221;  Compare these numbers to 42% of search users on non-Google search engines like Yahoo and MSN choose a sponsored link over a natural listing.</p>
<p>Also, the conversion rate whether sales or leads may be affected by the source of a website visitor&#8217;s click-through.  A study conducted by MarketingSherpa called &#8220;Search Marketing Metrics Survey&#8221; in July 2004, showed that &#8220;conversions from (natural) search engine results are 25%+ higher than paid search ad conversions.&#8221;  Relevancy from search result listing to website is critical however you also need to consider the relevancy associated with the ad type &#8211; paid versus natural.</p>
<p>So you know the insight &#8211; what&#8217;s the solution?</p>
<p>Easy &#8211; don&#8217;t get caught up in an &#8220;either/or&#8221; decision, as a search engine marketer you must focus on both natural search through search engine optimization and paid search.</p>
<p>As the Enquiro study stated, &#8220;Unless a company is willing to forfeit either 70% (in the case of natural) or 30% (in the case of paid) of their potential market to the competition they have to seriously consider both search channels.&#8221;</p>
<p>(2)  Cross-Search Engine Builds Brand Credibility</p>
<p>Tempting as it may be to put all of your eggs in one basket for convenience sake, Google is not the only major source of quality website visitors.  In the most recent search engine rankings issued by Nielsen/NetRatings in March 2005, Google was first with 47% of searches (among work and home users in U.S.); Yahoo second with 20.9% and MSN third with 13.6%.  If you only focus on Google, you are missing access to over 53% of the marketplace.</p>
<p>In addition, another separate study conducted by Nielsen/NetRatings determined that &#8220;the majority of Internet searchers use mutliple search engines.&#8221;   As a ClickZ article written by Rob McGann on February 28, 2005 stated, &#8220;The (Nielsen/NetRatings) study found that 58% of Google searchers also visited at least one of the other top two search engines, Yahoo and MSN Search.&#8221;</p>
<p>So what happens when a potential customer finds your search listing on Google yet you are no where to be found on MSN or Yahoo?  What if they only see a sponsor listing on Google which they immediately view as less than relevant?  How about a major slam against your credibility?</p>
<p>Yes &#8211; that&#8217;s right.  Because of the wide-spread utility of the internet for research and consideration during a buying cycle, if you are not found across search engines for a particular keyword search, you don&#8217;t exist in the eye of the searcher as a potential option to fulfill their needs.  On the other hand, if you are found across multiple search engines, you instantly receive a relevancy and credibility boost.</p>
<p>So you know the insight &#8211; what&#8217;s the solution?</p>
<p>Focus on generating search result listings for at least the top three search engines &#8211; Google, Yahoo and MSN.  Because these three feed a number of other search engines like AOL and AskJeeves (for paid listings) you will gain cross-search engine exposure.</p>
<p>In the worse case, work on generating natural search listings in Google and perform paid search in Yahoo and MSN using Yahoo Search Marketing (formerly Overture) to achieve the broad search exposure.</p>
<p>If search users are adopting multiple search engines to conduct their keyword searches then build your credibility with them by appearing across the major search engines especially for your top brand-oriented keywords.</p>
<p>(3) Search Engine User Demographics</p>
<p>Depending on the type of product or service you are selling, focusing on just Google or any other single search engine marketing strategy may be placing you in the entirely wrong marketplace.  Although absolute demographic figures are difficult to gather, a 2004 Enquiro study titled, &#8220;Search Engine Usage in North America&#8221; provided some interesting demographic characteristics for the top three search engines:</p>
<p>o Males are more likely to remain loyal with one search engines (primarily Google) while females are more likely to use more than one search engine (Google, MSN and Yahoo).</p>
<p>o Males prefer Google while females had a strong preference for MSN.</p>
<p>o For both males and females, a trusted site that offers unbiased information with the natural search results was the strongest preference.</p>
<p>o As educational levels increased, an affinity towards Google increased as well.  This may imply that Google uses are more sophisticated.</p>
<p>o Google users were more Internet savvy than non Google users therefore, for technology-related products Google may be a better source of qualified visitors while MSN and Yahoo may be better for non technology-related products.</p>
<p>So you know the insight &#8211; what&#8217;s the solution?</p>
<p>Visitor behaviors are dynamic &#8211; they have a tendency to change as frequently as the weather.  Therefore, do not assume that your potential customers are sophisticated and therefore reside in the Google pool.  Instead, use paid search engines to test all three major search engines to generate a sense of where your potential customers hang-out.  Once you find a populated pool of qualified visitors work on building your natural search listings to support and ultimately replace your paid search engine strategy.</p>
<p>Although it is easy to want to simplify search engine marketing by focusing all of your efforts on the biggest and most popular search engine, Google &#8211; it is business smart to avoid the temptation.  Yahoo and MSN are prominent players in the search engine market and may possess hidden gems that could explode your business growth.  Even more so, moving beyond the top three search engines is also important to extend your brand exposure on an international level.</p>
<p>By focusing your efforts across the top three search engines whether using natural or paid listings, you are placing yourself in the best position to build credibility, relevance and conversion &#8211; the main variables that lead to significant search engine marketing success for your business.</p>

<p>Most Nigerians who invest in the stock market today are institutional traders and high net worth individuals. The institutional participants comprise mainly of pension funds, fund managers and the large cooperatives. Retail investors have more or less abandoned the market and it appears that they are not in any hurry to come back. Not even some policies that have been put in place by the Securities and Exchange Commission and several enlightenment campaigns have been persuasive enough to attract the ordinary Nigerian investor to the local stock market.</p>
<p>The reason Nigerian retail investors have so much apathy for the stock market is easily understood when you consider the fact that a whole lot of people lost their life savings to the stock market as a result of the great crash. Nigerians have never experienced a market collapse of the magnitude that was witnessed in 2008. Driven by improved domestic economic conditions which characterized Nigeria&#8217;s return to democratic governance in 1999 and the reforms of the banking sector which encouraged banks to look to the capital market to source for funds in order to meet a new minimum capital requirement, there was a new wave of awareness about investment in stocks among Nigerians. Stock prices sky rocketed, reaching unprecedented high as more and more people across the investment divide approached the stock market to create wealth for themselves.</p>
<p>In March 2008, the market capitalization of quoted equities on the Nigeria Stock Exchange peaked at NGN13 trillion while the All Share Index was as high as 66,121.93 points emphasizing a decade of unprecedented growth. Unknown to many, stock prices had been overtly manipulated and overvalued to hoodwink unsuspecting investors who were driven by the profit objective. These unwholesome practices festered due to weak regulation and poor investor knowledge. However, a majority of people who had invested in the market did not understand the dynamics; they rode in the tide and eventually sustained heavy losses when the market collapsed later in the year.</p>
<p>Unfortunately this majority who lost money, some of them their life savings were retail investors. They were people who abandoned their small businesses to join the fray of speculators; some of them invested the whole of their severance benefits and pensions while a large number of others borrowed money from the banks under unbridled margin loan schemes that pervaded the landscape at the time. Unfortunately, when the Asset Management Corporation was established to help resolve the problem of toxic assets in the financial system, this category of investors were excluded because the volume attributed to this segment of the market was not considered very impactful on the larger economy. But the truth remains that many people in this category were rendered poor, many family ties got broken and their children&#8217;s education interrupted because of the losses they sustained from the capital market.</p>
<p>But why did they lose money? And could it have been avoided? Four reasons can easily be identified.</p>
<p>1. The first reason, I believe many Nigerian retail investors burnt their fingers was the lack of sufficient knowledge about how the stock market works. Many people came into the market with the idea that money could be made within a short period of time, for some, as short as two weeks. This short term mentality influenced so many people&#8217;s decision to invest without caution and due diligence.</p>
<p>2. One other reason people lost money was greed. People became so greedy that even when their investment had appreciated reasonably, they hold unto it waiting to make triple their investment. It is pathetic to know that the majority of people who were caught in the web were those who did not exit from certain stocks when they ought to do because they were expecting higher capital gains. Expert investors know that greed is a dangerous emotion to manage effectively if you desire to be successful as an investor in the stock market. The drive for above than normal returns drove many investors to go contrary to their investment goals where one existed and thereby invested on highly speculative equities.</p>
<p>3. Bandwagon effect: Because so many people did not even understand why they are playing in the market, nor had the basic knowledge of how the market works, they simply move with the tide of the market. Diversifying your portfolio amongst different classes of investment or even within different sectors of the market provides a good hedge against market fluctuation. One easy way to diversify is by investing in mutual fund. Unfortunately, quite a good number of investors would rather put their entire investible fund in one stock they believe would appreciate reasonably in price. The implication of this is that when the market move contrary to expectations, you would have lost all your money.</p>
<p>What retail investors went through could have been avoided if there was sufficient investor education and if people were properly guided on the workings of the stock market. The event could have been better managed if people understood the basic principles of stock investing; if people knew that investing in stock was not the same as betting. Be that as it may, the meltdown has come and gone and the market has begun on an upward trajectory. If you had lost money during the period of melt down, it is time you counted your losses and move on. The stock market remains a veritable window for accumulating long term wealth and the opportunities are enormous for those who are patient enough to play by the rules.</p>

<p>Most people who offer advice on how to market products on the Internet don&#8217;t know what they are talking about. Most of the advice is a rehash of advice given to people 20 years ago about using direct mail letters, classified advertising and other forms of direct marketing, and then applied to the Internet.</p>
<p>And most of the advice is wrong, wrong, wrong.</p>
<p>In a series of articles in this department, I&#8217;m going to tell you what you need to know about successfully marketing your product or service on the Internet. And I&#8217;m going to tell you why so many people fail to do it right.</p>
<p><strong>Internet Marketing is a Game of Two Halves</strong></p>
<p>Marketing on the Internet can be summarised with just two basic strategies &#8211; these are either <strong>Push Marketing</strong> or <strong>Pull Marketing</strong>. Here&#8217;s what I mean.</p>
<p><strong>1. Push Marketing </strong></p>
<p>Push marketing is pretty much what it sounds like. It is the strategy of &#8216;pushing&#8217; your product ads into the faces of potential customers, hoping that if you &#8216;push&#8217; enough, you will eventually find buyers. Prime examples of Push Marketing on the Internet are spam email, pop-up ads, and intrusive banner ads. All try to &#8216;push&#8217; their way into your focus, and get you do something you really had no interest in doing. Most of the self-proclaimed Internet marketing &#8216;gurus&#8217; advise you to heavily invest in &#8216;push&#8217; marketing techniques. (Most of these same gurus don&#8217;t bother to mention that the three things consumers dislike the most about the Internet spam, pop-up ads, and intrusive banner ads &#8211; all push marketing.)</p>
<p><strong>2. Pull Marketing </strong></p>
<p>Pull marketing is the strategy of offering detailed content, information, tools and resources on a specific topic, which serves as a &#8216;magnet&#8217; to pull visitors to your site when they search for that information in the search engine. Pull Marketing works because most people who use the Internet are in &#8216;search&#8217; mode &#8211; searching for a solution to a specific problem or a specific product they wish to buy. Internet users in search mode use the search engines as their &#8216;find it fast&#8217; tool &#8211; particularly Google. They go to Google, type in the item or solution they are searching for, and then view a list of sites which may offer the resource they are searching for. When they find a site offering solutions, they are &#8216;pulled&#8217; to the site by the content or resources on that site. When they get to the site, they already know what they want, and if they find it there, they often buy on the spot.</p>
<p>The vast majority of purchases made on the web are made as a direct result of &#8216;pull&#8217; marketing. A web user searches Google for a specific product, finds it on a site, and buys it. No banner ads, no spam, no pop-ups involved.</p>
<p>The real reason most people use the Internet is that they can find almost anything they are looking for &#8211; solutions to problems or products to buy. They start at the search engine, and are &#8216;pulled&#8217; into the sites that have what they want. Pull marketing is the natural behaviour of the vast majority of Internet users.</p>
<p><strong>Push or Pull?</strong></p>
<p>Most of your Internet marketing &#8216;gurus&#8217; will tell you to concentrate your Internet marketing efforts on different forms of Push Marketing. And most of these same people just so happen to have a push-enabling product to sell you. In fact, if you check, you&#8217;ll find that most of these marketing &#8216;gurus&#8217; have never sold anything themselves except their Push products. Most seem to work on the &#8216;bigger fool&#8217; theory of marketing &#8211; which is the belief that there is always a &#8216;bigger fool than me&#8217; out there willing to fork over money.</p>
<p>If you look past the marketing gurus and start to track the success stories of small companies and individuals on the web, you&#8217;ll see that the real success stories invariably attribute their success to &#8216;pull&#8217; marketing. They created resources on a specific subject or topic, the search engine gave their sites high placement for key words relating to those topics, and visitors found the site through the search engines.</p>
<p>The vast majority of these small sites never used spam, never used pop-ups, and never used banner ads. They just provided resources on their sites which acted as a magnet to pull visitors to their site. And it is unlikely you&#8217;d even know about these sites unless you searched for the solutions or information they offer.</p>
<p><strong>Lotto Mentality?</strong></p>
<p>I think the major reason we still see so many people get involved with the kind of Push Marketing consumers so deeply despise is that many would-be entrepreneurs have &#8216;Lotto mentality&#8217;.</p>
<p>They think that paying for a <em>spam campaign</em>, or <em>obnoxious banner ads</em>, or <em>intrusive pop-ups</em> can overcome having an unwanted product. And they think if they send out millions of emails, surely enough fools will fall for the offer to make the seller some money.</p>
<p>Truth is, <em>it rarely ever happens.</em> Instead, in the case of the spammer, the spam creates angry consumers who complain to the seller&#8217;s web host, and the site is taken offline. If the seller is unlucky, he will become the target of the spam vigilantes who make it a personal vendetta to cause grief to spammers.</p>
<p>My advice &#8211; when it comes to Internet Marketing, avoid intrusive Push Marketing. Instead concentrate on building a content rich &#8216;magnet&#8217; site which pulls those with a specific interest to your site. Create the kind of site they will want to visit often, recommend to friends, and add to their favourites list &#8211; and you&#8217;ll be on the road to success.</p>
